The mighty Saints another step closer to returning to their spiritual home, with construction starting on the $30.3 million redevelopment of Moorabbin Oval.

Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos today with players from the Saints and local community leagues, demolished an internal wall to kick off works to transform the Linton St ground.

The redevelopment will give southern district grassroots football the modern, safe and inclusive facilities it deserves, and the St Kilda Football Club the high level training and rehabilitation facilities they need to return to finals glory.

This iconic ground will become a real community hub. The Saints will share the facilities with the South Metro Junior Football League, Southern Football Netball League, Sandringham Dragons and other AFL Victoria staff.

When complete, the upgrade will deliver modern administration and training facilities, better change rooms and amenities, new bistro and function spaces, a high-ball indoor training facility and gym, community recreation areas and improved car parking.

As the Saints prepare to take on the Demons for this weekend’s season opener, today’s milestone signals the start of a new era for the club.

The project will give about 15,000 budding footballers a flagship venue they can share with their heroes and be truly proud of.

New facilities for the Saints are expected to be ready for the 2018 season, with the entire project to be completed in October later that year.

The Andrews Labor Government is contributing $4 million, taking the total State Government investment for this project to $12 million.
