A second entrance will be added to the new Ormond Station being built as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s removal of the dangerous and congested North Road level crossing.

Member for Bentleigh, Nick Staikos, announced today that two sets of lifts will be built at Cadby Avenue to provide access down to the station platforms from the southern side of North Road. The main entrance to the station will be on the north side via Katandra Road.

Nearly a third of passengers arrive at the station from the south side of North Road. The extra entrance will eliminate the need for these passengers to cross North Road, making the station and local area safer and more accessible.

It will also improve traffic flow on North Road by reducing the amount of time cars are stopped at the pedestrian lights because many people will access the station via the new lifts, rather than the existing pedestrian crossing.

A second entrance to the station was raised during recent public forums for the three level crossing removal projects at North, McKinnon and Centre roads.

The project team has incorporated this feedback into the design of the station, and works on the new entrance will begin shortly.

Some local road access changes will occur to accommodate the new entrance, with a section of Cadby Avenue becoming one-way. The Level Crossing Removal Authority will be speaking to local residents about the changes over the coming days.

Major work on the removal of the dangerous, congested level crossing at North Road and the rebuilding of Ormond Station began last month and is expected to be complete in late 2016.

Removal of the three level crossings at North, McKinnon and Centre roads, and the rebuilding of the three neighbouring stations, is being delivered as part of a $524 million package of works that includes the removal of the level crossing at Burke Road in Glen Iris and the rebuilding of Gardiner Station.
