The Andrews Labor Government today opened Southland Station providing better access to one of Melbourne’s largest shopping precincts, easing traffic congestion and providing an economic boost to the area.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan joined Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos and Member for Mordialloc Tim Richardson to mark the opening with passengers, shoppers and staff.
Melbourne’s newest train station will cater for more than 4,400 passengers per day, providing direct access to Southland shopping centre and cinemas.
In the past, passengers had to catch the bus or walk from Highett and Cheltenham stations.
The new station includes ramp and stair access to both platforms, accessible toilets, shelter and CCTV on both platforms, and bicycle hoops in the station precinct.
Key design elements of the station were shaped by consultation with the local community and construction of the new station has seen 600 tonnes of earth moved and over 60,000 hours worked.
Southland Station will be the 12th new station to be opened by the Labor Government, with trains running every ten minutes during the day on the Frankston line.
